“Jedem Anfang wohnt ein Zauber inne” heißt es bei Hermann Hesse und hieß auch das Motto der alten bp. In diesem Sinne möchten wir euch von Zeit zu Zeit mit unseren liebsten Buchanfängen verzaubern und präsentieren heute die erste Auswahl. Titel und Autoren werden wir später in den Kommentaren ergänzen:

These are the stories that the Dogs tell when the fires burn high and the wind is from the north. Then each family circle gathers at the hearthstone and the pups sit silenty and listen, and when the story’s done they ask many questions:
»What is Man?« they’ll ask.
Or perhaps: »What is a city?«
Or: »What is a war?«

Now that the moon is near to full, the branch of an apple tree casts its nighttime shadow in through the high window across the wall beside my bed. This place is full of apple trees, and half of them are no more than crabs in the daylight; but the shadow on my wall, that blurs and shivers when the night wind passes and then grows clear again, is the shadow of that Branch the harpers sing of, the chiming of whose nine silver apples can make clear the way into the Land of the Living.

The old south land lies across the world like an open hand, hollowed a little at the palm. High over it tumbles the wind, and all along its margin tumbles the sea – rolling in slow sweeps on long white beaches, beating with hammers of water at headlands of rock. Under and in this tumbling of wind and water the land lies quiet like a great hand at rest, all its power unknown.

It is possible I already had some presentiment of my future. The locked and rusted gate that stood before us, with wisps of river fog threading its spikes like the mountain paths, remains in my mind now as the symbol of my exile. That is why I have begun this account of it with the aftermath of our swim, in which I, the torturer’s apprentice Severian, had so nearly drowned.
